Elon Musk Reveals Tesla’s (NASDAQ: $TSLA) Latest Version of Optimus: Artificial Intelligence Robot

Tesla

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) CEO Elon Musk just unveiled the latest version of Optimus, a humanoid bot powered by artificial intelligence. According to Elon Musk, Tesla could one day deploy the bot alongside humans at its Tesla factories. Eventually, it could replace them.

Details of the Tesla Humanoid Robot

Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO, first revealed the robot in 2021. At the time, he said the bot would be used for “dangerous, repetitive, and boring tasks.” Musk then went silent on the project before discussing it again in September 2022. Tesla released a prototype that month, generating a lot of discussion.

Optimus Update

On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, Tesla released an update video on the Optimus bot. While its walk is still awkward, it looks in good shape. The video update is one minute and forty three seconds long and shows off Optimus in various settings.

It can be seen at the Tesla factory walking along a lineup of Cybertrucks. There is also one scene where it is at the gym working out. In the last scene, we see a demonstration of its tactical feature, which gives it the ability to lift an egg without smashing it.

The latest Tesla bot is called the Optimus Gen 2 version. Previously, Tesla had released the Bumblebee version in September 2022 and the Optimus Gen 1 in March 2023.

Upgrades in Optimus Gen 2

According to the short video just released, the enhancements include:

  • Foot force/torque sensing
  • Articulated toe sections
  • Human foot geometry
  • Actuated neck
  • 30% speed boost

In general, Optimus Gen 2 looks more refined, it walks more smoothly, and its hand and finger movements are more sophisticated.

Still In Development

While the current Tesla Bot is highly advanced, it is not the most advanced robot in the world. Boston Dynamics is leading the charge in advanced robots. Its robots can run at the speed of a cheetah, self-stabilize, and do backflips. While Tesla’s bot looks promising, it could be years, or even a decade, before the first Tesla bot ever makes it to the production line.
